Executive Case Summary 1, How Could Information Systems (IS) Contribute to “The Perfect Order” for Organizations

One of the IS module requires the participants to write seven Executive Case Summaries during the semester, which seems quite helpful for practising writing skills and beneficial to future development.

The Executive Case Summary is due every Saturday midnight, so I will just publish mine here on Sunday, every week.

I think it will also be helpful to you, by knowing more of the current trends of the innovative application of Information Technologies in Business. At least I myself have found the abilities of combining our IT knowledge and business skills enormously important for nowadays success.

Information Technologies (IT) have become extremely important for the performances and profits of those firms who have far-flung and complex supply chains. However, many executives would simply consider the process as just plug large amount of data into management and analysis software. In fact, minimally, IS could help to facilitate collaboration in the supply chain, as well as an integration of the whole chain.

How could Information Systems (IS) contribute to “the perfect order” for organizations? Externally, the IS which is built to connect companies in real-time to both suppliers and customers, could help to enable the development of tighter relationships with both parties. P&G aggregates point-of-sale (POS) data from its customers through its replenishment system, enabling it to send products to retailers as soon as there are not enough products on shelves. It also transmits production requirements to its suppliers, which allows the suppliers to better plan producing and delivering raw materials on a just-in-time base. The result of such end-to-end connections is much lower average out-of-order rates.

Further more, IS can be applied to produce longer-term demand forecasts by facilitating integration of the whole company and its supply chain. With the help of data collected from customers and analysis produced by its IS, Qualcomm’s top management with finance, sales, marketing and supply chain, are able to discuss and analyze overall demand forecasts monthly, which helps it achieve a high on-time delivery rate of 96%.

    Recommendations

Organizations could first revamp their business processes and identify what makes imperfect orders under current situation in the short term, and then choose the technologies that support those new processes and help integrate the whole supply chain in the long run.
